Friendship Bench

With mental health at the forefront of everyone’s minds currently, we teamed up with Mary Frances Trust to bring you the ‘Friendship bench’ for mental health awareness month; which encouraged shoppers to ‘sit and talk’, helping to tackle loneliness by creating opportunities for the community to reach out to others. It comes after the Mental Health Foundation announced loneliness as the theme for the awareness week, from May 9th – 15th, explaining it affects many people and is a key driver of poor mental health.

The ‘Friendship Bench’ acted as a safe social space for anyone in the community who felt isolated or lonely; encouraging conversation, new connections and friendships with others in the community.

The ‘Friendship Bench’ launched on Tuesday 10th May at the Swan Centre and remained there for a month – so please go along and see it for yourself!

We planted trees in support of Mental Health Awareness Week

On Friday 28 January 2022 the Swan Centre planted two Walnut trees in Park Garden, Leatherhead (just in front of St Mary and St Nicholas’ Church), following our successful ‘Plant a Tree’ campaign in 2021.

In May 2021 we supported Mental Health Awareness Week with our ‘Plant a Tree’ campaign, to help raise awareness of environmental and nature issues. ‘Nature’ was the theme for the 2021 Mental Health Awareness Week after many people found comfort in the outdoors during lockdown periods.

To take part in the ‘Plant a Tree’ campaign, we invited shoppers to spend over £5 at various stores over the course of the week and then upload a photo of their receipt to the Swan Centre website. For every receipt submitted, a contribution was made towards the new trees.

Walnut trees were chosen due to their love of Surrey soil and because of their long history with the Leatherhead area. The newly-planted trees will be fully grown in 20-30 years and may even grow beyond 200 years!

The winner of the prize draw, Joanna Slater, was invited to help plant the trees. Joanna is local to Leatherhead and regularly shops in the Swan Centre. Joanna, who was extremely excited to help with the initiative explained “It was great to be able to help the Swan Centre raise awareness of good mental health and wellbeing, an issue that is important to so many people particularly after the long periods of lockdown.”

Councillor Keira Vyvyan-Robinson, Cabinet Member for Projects, further said: “We were delighted to support Mental Health Awareness Week last year and recognise the contribution of nature to the wellbeing of our residents. We hope that these two new planted trees will flourish and play a part in supporting the wellbeing of future generations.”
